getting better

Say it with me in a silly voice: "Not dead yet. Getting better." "It's just a flesh wound." *

Still up in the air. The ride is Saturday. I would need to leave Friday morning.

Major is sound sound sound. Trots fine, frisky, no heat at all (ever since the beginning). Wound is pretty well closed up and hard. Still a bit of swelling, which went almost 100% down with hosing and walking. I worry, then remind myself he always swells, for anything, it is what he has always done. Still I worry.

Am I seriously contemplating deciding on Thursday?
Yes.
The leg will have to be 100% no swelling.

Do I hate last minute things?
Yes.

This ought to be fun.

Riding a carousel horse would be much easier. I saw these last weekend in Tilden Park in Berkeley. Lovely restored carousel. No leg injuries. They do look like they need some turnout time, a bit amped up.

*If you don't get the references, I am very sorry for you. You must watch all of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, many many times in repentance. Bring out your Dead: "I'm not dead, I'm not dead! I'm getting better! I don't want to go on the cart. I feel fine, I think I'll go for a walk. I feel happy! I feel happy! You can also reference the The Black Knight: "It's just a flesh wound!" "You're a loony..."

  1. Just watched Monty Python the other night...it never gets old. Had a conversation about migratory ducks this morning and couldn't help but immediately think of swallows and coconuts.

    1. Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate?

      Excellent.

  2. Wow, frustrating! So close to the ride and so many What Ifs...the conservative side of me says why risk it, it's early in the season yet..but you know the rest! Best wishes and hope things go smoothly either way.

    1. I'm usually conservative too. But that is the dilemma. There are so many "ands" and "buts" and "maybes". It IS early in the season, BUT it is only one of three rides I have planned. AND it is paid for. BUT his health is more important. BUT he seems sound and fine. AND there will be vets. BUT I don't want to push it.

      arrrgghhhh!

I'm going to go out and do a quick ride this evening and see where are. If it is aggravated at all, I'll pull the plug on the whole idea.

  3. Just don't forget your favorite color.

And always be cautious of rabbits...

  4. "Don't worry about it, it's a long way from his heart", is how my old vet always used to reassure me about leg wounds..

Good luck with the ride, go for it! (maybe bring some coconuts just in case)

    1. haha! My old trainer would say the same thing!

I could just walk in front on him, knocking coconuts, and scare all the other horses!

  5. It's now thursday.......Are you going? It's a hard decision. If you makes you feel better, I know the vets that are going to be vetting the ride and if you show it to them and tell them your concerns, they will definitely tell you if they think they see ANYTHING and you can pull. Also - you might get a refund if you come and then don't vet into the ride. Also there is multiple loops into camp which might make it easier to pull in the middle of the ride.

How does he look today? Argh! Horses are so "fun"....

    1. I'm going. It looks good, just a tiny bit of edema, which he gets with any cut. I'll tell the vets and hope for the best.

None if the loops go back to camp though, all away vet checks (at least it was last year). I guess trails go back though.

He was a fire breathing monster for a brief ride. Arrggh!

  6. MMm.....OK - I'm notoriously bad with maps and probably totally misread the maps. I had planned on lunch back in camp so now I need to go back and prep my crew bag. See! you already are more prepared than I am!!!!!!!!
